Hip movements for going underneath: backroll, swinging and pendulum.
Try drilling the leg and hip movements solo and with a partner to get a feel for them. You’ll find that when they resist one direction, they usually leave themselves open to the other.
Thanks for the comments and feedback on my notes! Really appreciate it. I’ve been pretty successful in stalling my opponent from the Z-Guard position but my biggest struggles have been getting underneath to the deep half guard and transitioning to the X-Guard. I found the push / pull effect very insightful and will let you know how that goes!
With this series on the half guard do you plan on showing some stuff from half butterfly position? This is another position I struggle to get into from my half guard (Z-Guard).
Thanks again!
The way I move from half guard to half butterfly (and then full butterfly) are in this video:

With all the space you can make with z-guard, you can usually just swivel your leg and put the hook in too.
You should get Kesting’s half guard DVD if you really want to work on half butterfly.
